Meet This Month's Featured Staff Member: Kristin Mast, MSW
St. Luke's is lucky enough to have a full-time Social Worker on staff. This month, we sat down with her to find out more about what she does and what she loves. Read the full Q&A below.
What do you do here at the clinic? I am a medical social worker. I work on getting grants for patients to cover expensive medication and medical equipment, I do prior authorizations for medications, help patients find and use available community resources, and help them navigate through the medical system.
What drew you to social work?
I was a history major in college with a minor in social work, and I enjoyed working with people and being able to help them navigate through tough situations. When I graduated with my Bachelors, I was offered a fellowship to earn my Master's Degree in Social Work and accepted right away! I actually graduated with a Master's in Social Work with a concentration and license for School Social Work.
What is your favorite thing about your job?
My favorite thing about my job is the people! I love everybody I work with and look forward to seeing my co-workers every day! I also really look forward to spending time with patients and getting to know them. It is such a privilege that they trust me and allow me to help out!
What is your favorite way to spend your free time?
I have so many favorite ways to spend my free time. I just got a new electric bike, and I love going for long bike rides with my husband. I also like taking the camper to go visit my daughter and son-in-law, and my new grandson, Finn. I love to visit my family in Illinois! At home, I like to work out in the yard, sew and read.
What can't you live without?
I probably couldn't live without electricity! I love to read books on my e-reader, sleep to a fan at night and ride my electric bike!
If you were an ice cream flavor, what would you be and why? If I were an ice cream flavor I would probably be Rocky Road because my life has been filled with many ups and downs.
What movie or song title best sums you up?
I think the old hymn "In the Garden" sums me up the best. I keep centered and grounded by spending my time alone with God each morning.
"I come to the garden alone While the dew is still on the roses And the voice I hear, falling on my ear The Son of God discloses"
What is your favorite thing to do in the Fall?
I love everything about Fall!! I love raking leaves, carving pumpkins and going to orchards and picking apples!
What book, show or podcast are you loving right now? One of my favorite authors is Maeve Binchy, and I am reading Chestnut Street right now. Her writing grabs my interest as she introduces and leads you through the lives of each of her characters!
What brings you joy?
My family brings me so much joy. My husband and I have many fun adventures together, and I have four kids that are pretty much all grown up now and I really have fun getting to know the adults they have become. Also, my first grandson, Finn, brings me so much joy! I love watching him grow and develop!
What give you hope?
The small and simple things that people do for each other gives me hope. Little acts of kindness send out ripples that affect so many people!
